Fourth Grade Core Curriculum
4th Grade Language Arts
At the fourth grade level, the students' reading and writing mechanics are refined and the students explore different genres and types of writing in greater depth. The class reads several age-appropriate novels, poems, and short stories together, and students are responsible for several more each quarter independently. Projects such as designing a book jacket, writing a letter to a character, and biography dress-up and presentation are designed to promote creative analysis and effective communication of ideas. Reinforcing research techniques and skills such as Internet and encyclopedia usage, note-taking, and outlining allow students to write a research paper at the end of the year. |

4th Grade Math
The fourth grade math program reinforces students' skills in math operations, exposes them to new techniques for more complex problem solving, and is integrated into the major class project for the year, the CES Popcorn Company. Decimal operations, standard and metric measurement, word problems, money usage, and averaging figures play key roles in the operation and analysis of the popcorn business. With each tasty bag of popcorn the students sell to the school community, the company enriches the students' experience with math and builds passion and appreciation. |

4th Grade Science
A wide range of scientific units comprise the fourth grade curriculum, with a continued emphasis on application of the scientific method to better understand our world. Group and individual experimentation build on lecture and discussion on the spectrum of life and physical sciences. Students begin to understand the basics of important and interesting topics like sound, electricity, and light/color. The students use the scientific method to design, implement, and present their own project in the Science Fair. |

4th Grade Social Studies
In addition to exposing the students to basic economics and commerce through the set-up, marketing, and operation of the class popcorn company, the fourth grade social studies program strives to develop a deep knowledge of the regions of the United States. Native American culture from each region is studied, as well as climate, natural resources, modern industry, population, and major cities. Fictional books are presented as cultural examples, and computer programs and group projects compliment the curriculum. The program concludes with a study of Louisiana’s unique history and characteristics, a unit highlighted by class trips to two historical plantations, the State Capitol, and the Governor’s mansion. |
