Second Grade Core Curriculum
2nd Grade Language Arts
The second grade language arts program strives to build the students’ ability to read, write, think, and discuss critically and creatively. Students read extensively in class—individually and as a group—and work to connect texts, analyze characters, and write book reports. Writing exercises target key mechanics, sentence structure, spelling, and handwriting. The students become familiar with reference books through independent use, and enjoy exploring many types of writing such as letters, poetry, creative, and non-fiction. Additionally, the second grade manages the CES Express Post Office. |

Money, including making change and counting coins, are done using a daily money word problem and logged in a journal. Clock activities include telling time to the minute and five minutes, elapsed time and use in real life situations. Fractions and comparing fractions are also explored. 2nd Grade Science
The second grade science curriculum centers on the role of water in the world while introducing the scientific method. Students explore units in weather, oceans, the water cycle, and tropical rain forests. They read children's literature in these fields, develop a broad scientific vocabulary, and build a basic understanding of our world. The students follow up creatively designed experiments in these domains with journal entries and group discussions to build communication skills and ensure comfort in discussing science. The second grade visits the zoo and the aquarium. We also enjoy Paleontologist Day in the spring. |

2nd Grade Social Studies
The second grade social studies program utilizes annual holidays and historical biographies to expose children to the richness of history and society. The students read, write, and discuss the traditions and historical figures responsible for holidays like Columbus Day, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Memorial Day, and President's Day. Students read several works of non-fiction and prepare a costume and presentation for a historical figure of their choice on Biography Day which is usually held on the Thursday before Easter. Teachers continue to stress the values and positive character traits of historical figures and the diverse cultures of our own world. The children memorize a riddle about their historical figure and will need help organizing a simple costume for the big day.
